This cooling and refreshing essential oil is used in aromatherapy to stimulate the mind, increase mental agility and to increase focus, while cooling the skin, reducing redness and calming irritation and itchiness.

It furthermore helps to ease spastic colon, migraine, headaches, sinus and chest congestion and boosts the digestive system.

Peppermint contains nine expectorant compounds which help move mucous up and out of the lungs.

Its main constituent, menthol, thins mucous, making the expectoration easier.

Peppermint also contains antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial compounds making it effective in the treatment of gingivitis, colds and flu, and respiratory infections.

BATH: Combine 8 drops into hot bath. May invigorate your skin and leave you feeling refreshed.

DIFFUSION:

  • Diffuse in car diffuser to keep alert while driving long distances or when drowsy.
  • Diffuse 10-20 drops throughout the day. May assist with headaches, colds, flu, fevers and asthma.
  • For respiratory issues Peppermint blends well with Eucalyptus radiata.

INHALATION:

  • During cold or flu, rub a drop or two on your chest, then cup hands over nose and breathe it in.
  • Boil a pot of water on the stove, remove from heat, drop 2-5 drops of Peppermint oil into the pot, put a towel over to create a "tent", and inhale deeply for relief from congestion due to head colds, bronchitis and asthma.

INTERNAL:

  • Peppermint is certified as GRAS ("Generally Regarded As Safe" for internal use) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and is used in the food industry.
  • Peppermint essential oil is strongly antispasmodic.
  • Historically pain from duodenal or stomach ulceration has been shown to have been helped by Peppermint, as has irritable bowel syndrome, and stomach cramping. In duodenal ulceration and irritable bowel syndrome, peppermint is more effective when a small amount of the oil is mixed with marshmallow herb or slippery elm root powder and taken in capsule. This mucilaginous mass sits in the bottom of the stomach, then drops down into the duodenum fairly intact and immediately soothes the affected area.

TOPICAL:

  • For a refreshing pick me up, and to aid in digestion, add a drop to a glass bottle of pure water. Shake well and sip slowly throughout the day.
  • The pain of gall and kidney stones has been shown to have been helped by the use of Peppermint. Apply 2 to 4 drops mixed in a teaspoon of carrier oil over the area of concern.
  • When included in a cream or lotion, it may help to ease the sting of sunburn, reduce redness of inflamed skin.

SAFEY PRECAUTIONS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Used in moderation peppermint is not toxic or irritating.
  • It should not be used anywhere near the noses of babies or children under the age of three.
  • Do not use near the face generally as it may cause a spasm in the larynx.
  • It may also cause adverse reaction in those who suffer atrial fibrillation.
